The importance of “one health approach” to the AMR study and surveillance in Angola and other African countries
Multidrug-resistant bacterial isolates are spreading in low- and middle-income countries, including Africa, due to poor sanitary conditions and close human-animal interaction. In Angola, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) prevalence is scarce, especially regarding veterinary isolates. This review aimed to identify research gaps and emphasize the importance of conscious antimicrobial use and preventive strategies. The findings revealed high AMR incidence in sub-Saharan Africa due to lack of antibiotic legislation, poor sanitary conditions, and poverty. The “One Health Approach” focusing on environment, animals, and humans is scarce in Africa. Minimal surveillance capacity and inadequate implementation of AMR surveillance programs are challenges. Controlling AMR requires a multisectoral approach and governmental commitment.
